Travel Weight for Star Adventurer
thingiverse
Travel weight for my Star Adventurer also serves as a tripod weight when attached to a length of cord or neck strap from an ID card, etc. Two sizes of weights offer options but I will likely carry two smaller ones while on site. A swivel lid provides added convenience, and the weights measure 90mm in diameter with the smaller one being 50mm high and the larger approximately 85mm tall. The goal is to load these containers on-site with materials such as sand, gravel, or coins to save weight when traveling. They also function as spare battery containers which can be used as ballast as well. A lightweight fastening system proved challenging to design so I plan to position it at the end of the bar and secure it in place using gravity. A horizontal opening for hex nuts and a bolt is included, but its effectiveness remains uncertain. On my print, the hex opening was slightly smaller than an M4 nut so I screwed one all the way up the bolt and another onto the end, then heated it with a candle flame and pushed it home with pliers to effectively weld the nuts in place. The lid can be secured with M3 bolts and nuts, with an M3 nut-shaped recess included in three places. This proved to be a tight fit so I heat welded mine in place, using only one bolt to allow for free swiveling of the lid. In hindsight, three fixing points were unnecessary. A self-tapping screw can also be effective at holding the lid in place, and enlarging the hole allows it to rotate freely around the screw. Printing at 0.3 resolution and 10% infill worked well without needing supports, and the objects are properly oriented for printing according to the files.
