‘Golem’ Emerges from Toxic Metropolis. It's not far-fetched to label the swirling vortex of scorching pollutants churning beneath this city as a novel form of primordial soup. In fact, scientists now confirm that the extreme combination of pressure, chemical runoff and heavy metals has given rise to a new species: the Golem. According to Astrobiologist Dr. M. Palmer, Galmi Emersus is unlike any genus previously identified on Earth. It's not composed of DNA or even RNA, but instead: ‘The Golem bonds with almost any material, often trash, and incorporates it into its own adaptive system. I say system, because the Golem is a single entity in the sense of a flock of birds – able to move with a unified purpose, despite being comprised of numerous individuals. It's the sum of its constituent parts, be it the spongy mass of biomolecules, the galmicai, or the trash it merges with. Tubes and pipes offer a means of circulating mass from the Golem's acidic interior to the surface, while chains and ropes are used like tendons, providing the creature great strength.’ The appearance of the Golem on these still partially-inhabited streets hasn't been welcomed by all. Just today a local woman witnessed a human-like Golem climbing some stairs. ‘Then it just sat at my door,’ she said, ‘up to no good.’ ‘The Golem has no concept of good or evil,’ Dr Palmer said. ‘Although radically amorphous, it is shaped by its environment like any other organism – if a Golem has grown legs and learned to climb stairs, it's because being able to do so conferred a survival benefit of some kind. I urge Trash City residents to welcome the arrival of the Golem from a respectful distance.’
