Trap Cap Face Mask

Trap Cap Face Mask

This mask uses open-cell polyurethane foam as both a filter and as a gasket to seal the mask to your face. The solid front of the mask blocks all forward exhalents (kind of like a face shield), and all air is filtered, in and out, through the 3/4" thick foam gasket. The foam is very breathable, but the convoluted path through the foam is also excellent at trapping droplets and aerosols. This design covers less of your face than traditional masks, making it less hot and clammy. The mask weighs about 1 oz (28g). For the foam seal, I started off with a strip of 3/4" wide x 1 3/8" tall x 12" long low-density foam. It can be trimmed easily with sharp scissors for a custom fit around your nose and chin. The foam strip then just tucks into a channel on the inside of the mask. It can easily be removed and washed. After washing, it can be wrung dry almost instantly by squeezing it while wrapped in a paper towel.
