Transposition of the great arteries after switch
sketchfab
The arterial switch surgery is now widely performed to correct a transposition of the great arteries (TGA). You can see what TGA looks like before surgery here: https://skfb.ly/6xrnt What happens during this surgery? Surgeons cut through the arteries just above the heart valves. They disconnect the coronary arteries from the aorta and attach them to the artery that leads to the lungs, closing any holes in the aorta along the way. The aorta is then relocated to the base of the pulmonary trunk, forming a new aorta as it does so. Next, the pulmonary trunk is moved and attached to the base of the aorta. This fusion creates a new pulmonary artery that functions like one found in a normal heart. As a result, this surgery restores blood flow to a level similar to that seen in a healthy heart.
