A dustpan, a cleaning tool that often accompanies a broom or brush, features a flat scoop design and can be hand-held for domestic use. Commercial establishments sometimes opt for the hinged variety attached to a stick, allowing users to stand while using it. This ergonomic design was patented by African American inventor Lloyd Ray in 1897. Handheld dustpans are versatile and can be used with either full-size brooms or smaller whisks/dusters; some come as combined units.
