An Archimedes' trammel is a device that constructs an ellipse. It includes two shuttles constrained by perpendicular tracks and a connecting rod, which is attached to the shuttles via pivots at specific points along its length. As the shuttles move back and forth on their respective tracks, the rod's end traces an elliptical path. The ellipse's semi-axes, lengths a and b, correspond to the distances from this point to each pivot.
