Trajan, born on September 18, 53 AD, reigned as Roman emperor from 98 AD until his death in 117 AD. Declared optimus princeps ("the best ruler") by the Senate, Trajan is remembered for his successful military campaigns and leadership during the greatest expansion of the Roman Empire in history. He oversaw extensive public building programs and implemented social welfare policies that earned him a reputation as one of the Five Good Emperors who ruled during an era of peace and prosperity in the Mediterranean world. Trajan's reign saw significant colonization efforts, particularly in the ancient province of Dacia, which now comprises Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, Serbia, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland.
