They are used to connect two plywood boards in a way that levels the boards to each other, and allows you to disconnect them when needed. They are attached to the boards in an alternating pattern, one on the first board, then one on the other. To join four feet of plywood, you will need at least 12 of them. The horizontal hole is for locking them together with a machine screw. I made this for my 12 foot long train set that splits into two easier to move six foot sections.
