Traian Vuia, a renowned Romanian inventor and aviation trailblazer, brought forth an innovative design on August 17, 1872. He pioneered the creation of a tractor configuration monoplane, which he built and rigorously tested. A pioneering feat was achieved when Vuia demonstrated that a flying apparatus could ascend into the air by running on wheels along an ordinary road. This groundbreaking moment took place on March 18, 1906, as Vuia successfully propelled his invention to a powered hop of 11 meters (36 feet). He later claimed an even more impressive powered hop of 24 meters (79 feet). Although he failed to achieve sustained flight, Vuia's invention had a profound influence on Louis Blériot, who used it as inspiration for designing monoplanes. In addition to his work in aviation, Vuia also explored the realm of helicopters, leaving an indelible mark on the world of engineering. After becoming a French citizen in 1918, Vuia displayed unwavering patriotism by leading Romanians, particularly Transylvanians residing in France, during World War II. His courageous efforts did not go unnoticed. Vuia returned to his native Romania in 1950.
