Shogi is a Japanese board game often referred to as Japanese chess or the Game of Generals. It's played similarly to traditional chess, with the objective being to checkmate the king. The main differences between Shogi and regular chess are minor tweaks, but two key rules significantly alter gameplay. Firstly, captured pieces become the property of the captor and can re-enter play by being dropped onto almost any vacant square. Secondly, in Shogi, all pieces except for the gold general and the king can promote to a single type of piece - the character on the backside of that piece. Promotion is notably easier in Shogi due to the promotion zone's proximity to the starting position of the pieces (the first three rows on the opponent's side).
