Traditional Irish Flute in D
thingiverse
This is a traditional Irish flute that can be played, crafted from precise measurements taken directly from a wooden flute. Each section where two parts join has three holes, designed to accommodate a 1cm filament rod that's carefully inserted for perfect alignment when gluing the sections together. This clever design makes the process virtually foolproof, eliminating any finicky moments that might occur without it. I printed this flute in PLA and discovered that it produced a clear sound across the first and second octaves - though I'm not skilled enough on the flute to assess its performance beyond that range. The tone was pleasing and reasonably loud, making me eager to share my creation with others. To achieve the best results, I recommend sanding or filing each section to create a smooth interior before gluing them together. A rough surface can make it challenging to produce a clear sound in the lower octave. If you're printing with ABS, consider using vapor smoothing if your setup allows for it - unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to try this yet. The print shown features an experimental weathered wood finish on brown PLA, but I wasn't entirely successful in achieving the desired effect. As an avid enthusiast of Irish flutes, I saw this project as the perfect opportunity to bring my design skills to life and create a functional instrument that I could play myself.
