My iPhone 3G, 3G S case, the DLO HybridShell, was accompanied by a challenge: car mounts were designed for iPhones without casing. Thus, I crafted a custom holder using the specifications below. After a month of tractor driving, my iPhone never slipped out; the bottom's open design allows for charger plug-in convenience. Mounted with double sided tape, it proved reliable. To construct this holder, I used a water jet to cut out parts - two centerpieces were necessary due to insufficient aluminum thickness. The assembly required four machine screws.
