I needed a replacement for my 24V AC track light system, but couldn't find suitable fixtures. The solution was straightforward: I swapped out the failed track lights with LED Cob lights by designing and printing my own track light fixture in PETG. To convert AC to DC, I used a bridge rectifier chip that I attached to a buck converter. I salvaged the contacts from the original track light fixture so I could plug my replacement into the existing track. The old halogen bulbs used 40 watts each and generated excessive heat, melting the PTFE wires in the fixture and causing shorts; the track also showed signs of burning. I rewired some fixtures and set my buck converter to 11.5V, which reduced power consumption from .25 amps at 24V to .5+/- amps at 11.5V. The LED cobs only reached 55 degrees C in testing, so I decided not to use heat sinks. These lights produce plenty of light while using a fraction of the wattage and generating much less waste heat. What's more, I avoided spending $1000 on new 24V track fixtures. The installed fixtures work beautifully and look great, with a cost per fixture under $5.
