The board is designed as a single solid block of wood, with precise square outlines laser-cut into its surface. The goal was to achieve a visually striking effect by applying spray stain in a gradient pattern, with darker squares concentrated at their centers and some spillage onto adjacent lighter squares - much like the relentless spread of coronavirus disregards national borders. Each chess piece is composed of two distinct 3D-printed components: a base and a removable top. A 3/4-inch hole is drilled into the center of each piece to accommodate a steel insert, adding weight and stability. The pawns are constructed with a 1-inch diameter base, while rooks, knights, and bishops feature a 1.5-inch diameter base. In contrast, queens and kings boast an impressive 2-inch diameter base.
