Scientists estimated benzene contamination plumes using earth science methods, as shown in this figure. Blue indicates plumes that do not meet soil leaching standards, red indicates plums that do not meet secondary leaching standards, and yellow represents plumes where benzene was detected, although they comply with leaching standards. Overlaid on a major building (underground space) of Toyosu New Market, the estimated benzene contamination plume before countermeasures primarily spread in the western part of the 6th district's fish market warehouse building and its surroundings, as well as in the western part and eastern to northern parts of the 5th district's fruit and vegetable building. In terms of depth, most have expanded below AP-2.0 m (the bottom of the underground space). Additionally, when soil purification is completed in an area (red-colored area) down to a depth of AP-2.0 m, it becomes clear that, upon focusing on the distribution of areas with countermeasures and contaminated plumes, high-density pollution exceeding secondary leaching standards has been almost removed, but there is a possibility that non-compliant soil leaching standards may have spread beyond the countermeasure area.
