Toy Racing Car

myminifactory

This is a 3D scan of a vintage tinplate toy racing car, from the impressive collection of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences. Crafted in Germany around 1930 by Johann Distler & Co, it exemplifies the type of toys that were widely available in Australia during the early 20th century. This particular item was one of ten Museum objects scanned in 3D for Hack the Collection, a groundbreaking public program held as part of the 2014 Sydney Design Festival. The program matched ten forward-thinking Sydney designers with ten intriguing objects from the Museum's collection. Those designers spent two intense days in the Festival FabLab, skillfully manipulating the 3D object files to create their own innovative hacked interpretations right before an enthusiastic public. At the end of the weekend, the designers' remixed objects were expertly 3D printed on MakerBots and displayed alongside their original counterparts. We view our collection as a treasure trove of raw assets waiting for inspiration. We actively encourage you to download and remix our collection as you take it in new and exciting directions. We would love to hear about the fresh forms and uses you discover for our objects – please share your work with us!
