Toxodon platensis - right upper molar tooth
sketchfab
This is a 3D laser surface scan of Toxodon platensis's right upper molar tooth. Darwin collected it on October 1, 1833. It's between 126,000 and 11,700 years old. This was scanned as part of the Museum’s Darwin Fossil Mammals digitisation project. Learn more at www.nhm.ac.uk/darwinsfossils. Comments: This tooth closely matches one in the skull socket of the type specimen. Similarities between this tooth and rodents' teeth influenced Darwin's and Owen's thinking about Toxodon's relatives. We now know it wasn't closely related to rodents. What is Toxodon?
