This is a precise 3D laser surface scan of the left upper incisor/front tooth from Toxodon, dating back anywhere between 126,000 and 11,700 years. It was captured as part of the Museum's comprehensive Darwin Fossil Mammals digitization project. Learn more at www.nhm.ac.uk/darwinsfossils. When analyzing this tooth, Owen remained uncertain whether to classify it within the same species as the Toxodon platensis cranium. He did believe, however, that it belonged to the same species as the lower jaw. The latter specimen was designated Toxodon darwinii in honor of Darwin. This likely represents the same species as T. platensis. What exactly is Toxodon?
