This is a detailed 3D laser surface scan of the right side of the lower jaw, featuring 5 cheek teeth and fragments of 5 anterior teeth / incisors. Collected in 1832 by Darwin, it falls within an age range of 126,000 to 11,700 years old. This scan is part of the Museum's comprehensive digitization project for Darwin Fossil Mammals. Learn more about this initiative at www.nhm.ac.uk/darwinsfossils. When describing this specimen, Owen was uncertain whether it belonged to the same species as a cranium found in Uruguay. In 1866, Herman Burmeister assigned it a new name: Toxodon darwinii, in recognition of Darwin's contributions. T. darwinii likely represents the same species as Toxodon platensis. Toxodon refers to a genus of extinct mammals. This specimen is cataloged under number NHMUK PV M 16566.
