Situated on the Grote Markt in Groningen is the grand town hall, a stunning work of architecture created by renowned architect Jacob Otten Husly in the neoclassical style. Replacing the medieval wine and town hall, which met its demise in 1775, this magnificent structure was constructed on the same site. A groundbreaking competition was held for a new design, marking the first time this approach had been taken in Dutch architecture, and Jacob Otten Husly emerged victorious in 1774. Despite having conceived an innovative design, lack of funding ultimately led to its non-implementation. The city's economic prosperity during the eighteenth century was largely driven by peat production; however, subsequent gains were short-lived following the competition launch. In a revised effort spanning two phases between 1793 and 1795, followed by another from 1802 to 1810, architect Husly made significant contributions to the building's final design. Initially, the town hall boasted a U-shaped floor plan; however, it was modified in 1872 with the west side being converted into an enclosed space. Later, a striking extension was completed in 1962, referred to as the New Town Hall in Groningen, following a design by Jo Vegter, who garnered substantial criticism for his work. Connected via air bridge to its predecessor, the structure eventually gave way to a demolition process that culminated in 1996 and made way for residential and commercial developments at Waagstraat, skillfully designed by Italian architect Adolfo Natalini. The New Town Hall's departments found new homes in a reconfigured office located at Martinikerkhof: the Prefectenhof.
