Totoro is a very large furry gray creature, the guardian of the forest. He is not a traditional Japanese anime character. He was completely invented by director Hayao Miyazaki. Totoro fit very organically into the system of anime characters. He is a "blend" of several animals: tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog), cats (distinctive pointy ears and facial expression) and owls. He can't speak, he only makes growling sounds.
