Totem Pole Photoscan
thingiverse
This stunning carved totem pole rises dramatically overlooking Tumwater Falls in Tumwater Washington. Every single image was snapped from a unique perspective on the ground using Nikon's cutting-edge D5000 and an exceptionally sharp Nikkor 18-55 zoom lens set to its optimal 18mm setting. Upon meticulous examination, intriguing insights into the photogrammetry process emerge. The pole's right side displays significantly more intricate details than its left counterpart, thanks to the warm glow of sunlight illuminating it from that angle - a far cry from the inadequately lit photos captured from directly opposite. Moreover, the data quality degrades precipitously as one moves up the totem, a direct consequence of ground-level photographs taken with cameras positioned remarkably close yielding significantly richer results than more distant shots higher up, which inherently suffer due to being shot at farther ranges. The majestic eagle wings underwent deliberate restoration efforts while minor tweaks were applied to the concealed base below it - sections inaccessible during the original photogrammetric scanning process. Discussing this incredible totem and much more on the art of 3D printing was just one exciting aspect of our engaging conversation featured exclusively on the latest episode of 3D Printing Today, a dynamic podcast available via iTunes, Stitcher Radio or right here at http://threedprintingtoday.libsyn.com/.
