The TOS-1 is a Soviet self-propelled heavy flamethrower system designed by Uraltransmash and manufactured by Kurganmashzavod. It entered service with the Russian Ground Forces in 2001 and has seen combat use in several conflicts, including the Second Chechen War and the Syrian Civil War. The TOS-1 is mounted on a T-90 tank chassis and features six BM-1 flamethrower launchers, each capable of firing an incendiary mixture consisting of high explosives and flammable liquids. The system's primary purpose is to deliver area-of-effect attacks against enemy positions, using the intense heat generated by the flamethrowers to ignite fuel and other combustible materials. The TOS-1A variant features a more powerful engine and improved armor protection, allowing it to operate in high-threat environments. It has also been equipped with an advanced fire control system, which enables accurate targeting of enemy positions at ranges up to 6 kilometers.
