This imposing Torso of Hercules originates from ancient Rome's 1st-2nd century AD. Provenance: It once belonged to Wright S. Ludington (1900-1991), a collector based in Montecito, California, who acquired it early in the 20th century. Ludington generously offered the sculpture to the Museum of Art of Santa Barbara in 1993, where it was accessioned as inv. no. 1993.1.87. The Torso later changed hands and was sold at Sotheby's New York on June 14, 2000, as lot 63.
