The bronze sculpture vividly captures Rodin's ferocity when tackling his clay creations. With hands that tore and gouged the torso, he sliced through the arms and thigh with wire, unleashing a fury that shook the very foundations of artistic standards. Critics of the time denounced these actions as brutal mutilations of the human form, viewing them as direct assaults on the revered principles of artistry. Yet, in those fragmented pieces, Rodin aimed to create an aesthetically stunning beauty that was both heroic and complete. He famously declared of another work, "Can't you see I left it in this state intentionally?" Rodin's monumental plaster cast, showcasing this composition, took center stage at his 1889 joint exhibition with Monet at the prestigious Galerie Georges Petit in Paris. Years later, he would draw upon a variation of Torso to craft The Walking Man, a testament to his unrelenting drive for artistic innovation.
