Torsion Polygonal Funnel
thingiverse
Human: Activity to easily convert your openscad design into a Thingiverse Customizer so that anyone can tweak around and generate their own customizations. How I Designed This Turn Your Openscad Design Customizable In my first activity to start using openscad http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1362201 , we learnt a few things about openscad so we are able to design things. We learnt that we had to define the parameters first, and then use the design commands. You can share your things with the world on Thingiverse, but it would be awesome to allow more freedom to people who do not want to bother to use design tools. Well, this is really EASY to do just by adding comments on your openscad code. Let's get on with it! Objectives Become familiar with how to write in OpenScad Designing in order for Thingiverse Customizer to be able to work Audiences • Any kid studying anything in relation with 3D printing or designing student (beginners level) • Anyone who needs a funnel fast!...but not anyone, one that noone else has Preparation • Students will need access to computers and ideally a 3D Printer in the classroom • Computers will be equipped with the necessary 3D printing software and OpenScad. • It is helpful to have students form into working groups of two or three so that they can collaborate on the design process. Having students work in groups is also helpful if you have a limited number of computers and/or limited 3D printer access, plus you will end up with several designs. Part 1: Complete Your Design On Openscad Make sure that on your openscad code you put the variables definitions first and then the actual design command. You may want to group the variables, for instance radiuses first and heights later. Remember, variable definition could be like this: Sides=5; Openscad Variable Definitions (Without Specific Comments For Customizer) Part 2: Retouch Your Design For Customizer Now, you can just add some comments here and there for customizer to understand. Before a block of variables you can add: /[Funnel Settings]/ Then will create a drop down list so that you can easily group variables Before each variable, just add accomment with the text that you want to see as help on customizer this is how each variable has its comment in the line just above and this is how it looks like on customizer Step 3: Publish On Thingiverse Go to thingiverse, create a new thing, upload the openscad file, and check the box "this is a customizer" Results At the end of this project, each group of students should have • Customised 3D printed funnels objects • Basic familiarity with OpenScad, structured programming and thingiverse customizer
