The Torre del Oro (English: Tower of Gold) stands as a dodecagonal military watchtower in Seville's southern Spain region. Originally built by the Almohad Caliphate to regulate access to Seville via the Guadalquivir river, its strategic importance remains significant today. This 13th-century structure was initially constructed in three levels, with each level designed to serve a distinct purpose. During the Middle Ages, it functioned as a prison, holding captive individuals who posed a threat to the ruling powers. The tower's name originates from the golden glow it emitted onto the Guadalquivir river due to its unique building materials – a mixture of mortar, lime, and pressed hay. This striking visual effect has become an iconic symbol of Seville's rich history. Located nearby is the Torre de la Plata (English: Tower of Silver), an octagonal tower that shares a similar architectural style. Its construction date remains unknown, but historians believe it was built during the same era as the Torre del Oro.
