The Tower of Pisa or Leaning Tower of Pisa (in Italian: Tower of Pisa) is the bell tower of the Cathedral of Pisa, located in Piazza del Duomo of Pisa, in the city of the same name, municipality of the Italian region of Tuscany and capital of the homonymous province of Italy. The tower began to lean as soon as construction started in August 1173. Its original height was 60 meters but now measures 56.67 meters from the base on the highest side and 55.86 meters from the base on its lowest side. Its weight is estimated at 14,700 tons and leans by about 4 degrees, extending 3.9 meters from vertical. It has eight levels: a base of blind arches with 15 columns, six decorated levels with open half-point arches, and a campanile at the top. The internal spiral staircase has 294 steps. It is considered, along with the cathedral it belongs to, one of the gems of Romanesque art.
