Torpedo Ram "EPIC VILHELMO" Ironclad of the THUNDER CHILD class
thingiverse
This is my take of what the warship that attacked the Martian tripods might have looked like. It has a ram bow, a double turret as primary weapon, three smaller guns in wing turrets and an aft turret, and of course three torpedo tubes in the bow. The tumblehome hull and low aft deck clearly show this vessel to be meant for coastal and harbour defense. Low silhouette, relatively narrow hull designed for speed, powerful engines: this is neither meant to cross oceans nor does it have the amenities to house and support the crew on board for a longer time; there are only basic living quarters and not enough storage room for victuals. You can imagine, if you look at the profile, that most of the room below decks would have been taken up by coal bunkers, boilers, engines, magazines for the ammunition and spare torpedoes and the foundations and turning mechanisms for the armoured turrets. So it is meant to stay at sea only a few days at a time, and in harbour the crew would mainly have been housed in barracks. The model was designed in parts: the lower hull, the upper hull and deck, the superstructure and bridge, the guns, and small parts like funnels, hatches etc. These sections are meant to be printed separately and then assembled, the turrets can then be rotated. Some details are still missing: propeller shafts and screws, the rudder, davits and boats, a tripod mast. I will add them by and by, and I can also publish the sections as separate files, if there is an interest in this design. Just contact me!
