The wooden torch was retrieved from the shipwrecked vessel, Betsy (44YO0088), situated off the coast of Yorktown, Virginia, in the York River. The well-preserved remains of Betsy offered a unique chance to collect data on ship construction and furnishings during the 18th century. It was part of a fleet destroyed by the British in 1781. Broadwater's research, documented in his 1992 publication "Shipwreck in a Swimming Pool," provided valuable insights into the Yorktown Shipwreck Archaeological Project's methodology and technology. This artifact was digitally scanned using a Go!Scan 50 at the Virginia Department of Historic Resources' curation facility in Richmond, Virginia, with permission granted for non-commercial educational use.
