Just an experiment on belt tension/flexing. When a belt is placed on a plain pulley, there's extremely limited surface area contact which could result in excessive flex in the X/Y axis when changing direction rapidly. If you distribute the tension evenly across the full profile of the tooth, however, this flex should be significantly reduced.
