Themistocles (459–524 BC) was a renowned Athenian general and politician who rose rapidly through the ranks in the early years of Athens' democratic system. As one of the new breed of politicians who weren't from aristocratic backgrounds, Themistocles gained widespread support among lower-class Athenians, often finding himself at odds with the city's noble families. Elected to serve as archon in 493 BC, he successfully convinced the Athenian government to invest heavily in its naval power, a strategy that became a hallmark of his political career. During the first Persian invasion of Greece, Themistocles played a key role at the Battle of Marathon and was likely one of the ten Athenian generals who led the city's forces to victory.
