The Tombs of the Kings is a massive burial ground situated approximately two kilometers north of Paphos harbor in Cyprus. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this impressive necropolis is steeped in history and cultural significance. The underground tombs, many dating back to the 4th century BC, were skillfully carved out of solid rock to serve as grand burial sites for Paphitic aristocrats and high-ranking officials up until the third century AD. Although not actually kings were interred there, the name 'Tombs of the Kings' reflects the grandeur and majesty of these ancient structures. Some of the tombs feature impressive Doric columns and beautifully frescoed walls that add to their overall splendor. Archaeological excavations continue to be carried out at the site, shedding new light on the history and significance of this incredible archaeological find. The tombs were carefully cut into the native rock, often mimicking the appearance of houses built by the living. Despite being known and occasionally explored for centuries, it wasn't until the 1970s and 1980s that systematic excavations began to uncover the secrets of the Tombs of the Kings. Led by Dr Sophocles Hadjisavvas, former Director of Antiquities of the Republic of Cyprus, these excavations uncovered a wealth of information about this remarkable site.
