Tomb of Sir David and Dame Margery Roucliffe
sketchfab
Human: 15th Century alabaster effigies of Sir David and Dame Margery Roucliffe lie in the southern chantry chapel of St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, Pickering, North Yorkshire. The effigies showcase exceptional craftsmanship despite being somewhat damaged over time. The medieval wall paintings in the church were sadly destroyed during the Reformation, which may also have caused the damage to the effigies. Sir David rests his feet on a lion, while Dame Margery's two dogs lie by her side. Winged beasts support their pillows, adding an air of elegance to the scene. The clothing is meticulously represented, with the Knight’s arms emblazoned on his surcoat and the Dame’s dress details visible for all to see. However, their hands and faces have been deliberately defaced, giving Sir David a somewhat unsettling appearance. The chantry was built in 1407, likely funded by the couple themselves. Today it serves as a Lady Chapel, with the original tomb still in place below.
