TOM the robot climbing Robot based on toy from 1895
thingiverse
I've always been fascinated by string climbing toys and I've managed to track down the earliest mass-produced version, created by the Lehmann toy company way back in 1895. It was called TOM the Climbing Monkey and it's been widely copied by every major maker of tin and plastic toys ever since. However, none of them have added a robot theme until now. That's why I'm excited to introduce you to TOM the climbing Robot, which can be easily 3D printed and built at home. I've also designed a simple Rocket and UFO project that's even easier to assemble if you're short on time or prefer something more straightforward. This video serves as both a demo and a step-by-step build guide, so feel free to follow along. As this design is a remix of an existing concept, I'll be posting it as a new thing project on the Alphadrome website. I'm using a string pull ring that I found years ago, designed by Greg Zumwalt. You can find more information about this mechanism on Youmagine at https://www.youmagine.com/designs/string-climbing-mechanism. The demo and build video are available on YouTube at https://youtu.be/xwCMvIkwwmk. If you'd like to see the full build instructions, pictures, and STL files, head over to the Alphadrome website at http://alphadrome.net/forums/topic/22543-tom-the-climbing-robot-based-on-the-1895-lehmann-toy/.
