Tom Swift Outpost in Space
thingiverse
Why did Tom Swift construct his Outpost in Space? Tom Swift had several compelling reasons for building his massive space station. When the book commences, Tom Swift requires a factory to manufacture solar batteries efficiently. Since his solar batteries are energized most effectively in outer space, Tom decides to build "a space factory where we can produce solar batteries." Phyl gasps in astonishment. "A space factory!" she exclaims. "Only a small one," Tom continues, "I'll locate it in an orbit fairly close to the earth, making the job of building it as straightforward as possible. Say, a little over a thousand miles up. From down here, you could see it racing around the earth like a tiny moon." However, Tom later greatly expands his Outpost in Space after a crucial conversation with a group of engineers: "Tom," says his father, "Mr. William Bruce is from the Consolidated Broadcasting Network and serves as chairman of this committee of engineers from major broadcasting companies. They've come to discuss an extremely critical issue with us." The group takes seats, then Mr. Bruce addresses the Swifts. "I'll state our problem at once. As you're aware, high-frequency-signal coverage in its present form is far from being efficient. Distances are short, necessitating numerous relay stations. Sometimes there's distortion. Also, sunspots or magnetic storms can completely disrupt the broadcast." In fact, he continues, "any reliable system of short-wave broadcasting over great distances is practically hopeless with our current methods. However, there's one solution to this problem," as a scientist, you've likely guessed what I'm about to propose." "A space station?" Tom bursts out in his enthusiasm. Mr. Bruce nods. "Exactly. Our committee has concluded that it's the only way we can effectively address our broadcasting issues—that is, by establishing a platform in space from which we can beam radio signals and have them relayed directly back to earth. Naturally, this would be an enormous undertaking. But we feel that Swift Enterprises is well-suited to take on the challenge."
