Tom Otterness - Playground Sculpture for MONA
sketchfab
These models of a sculpture by renowned artist Tom Otterness for MONA in Hobart, Tasmania, showcase some of the intricate process models behind his design. After meticulously scanning Tom's 1:12 scale clay maquettes - specifically, the heads, hands, feet, and cone figure's arms - I analyzed these scans to create a detailed profile cage, which was then printed full size in sections on a large format plotter by me. Tom's skilled sculpture assistants built the cage of profiles in sturdy plywood before packing the interior profiles with clay. Next, Tom resculpted the elements by hand for the full-scale casting patterns, adding his unique touch to the project. Tom and I collaborated closely in Rhino, where he designed other essential elements using pencil sketches. Together, we finalized the forms, spaces, and play elements to bring the sculpture to life. ARUP's expert engineers took charge of designing the structure, while Polich Tallix foundry crafted and fabricated the full-size bronze sculpture with precision. The finished masterpiece is now ready for installation in Hobart, Tasmania, where it will soon be unveiled to the public.
