Toilet Paper Protector (OLD/REPLACED)
myminifactory
UPDATE: DEC. 2019 - My TP Protector Mk2 had a critical failure on one of its loops earlier this month, rendering it less than perfect in its functionality. The cat could still easily access the paper from above if she felt ignored and needed to express her displeasure by eating more paper. I believe she was also pulling down on the loop that caused the critical failure. I've returned to the drawing board and designed a new version that should be much sturdier and provide better protection. The updated version is available here: https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-tp-protector-mk5-108133I adopted Trixie in May, and despite her mysterious past, she's proven to be incredibly happy, loving, and friendly with me... but unfortunately, not so much towards my toilet paper. A couple weeks ago, she developed a habit of chewing on it, which wasn't a huge problem but was somewhat weird considering its purpose, so I wanted to deter the behavior. I turned to 3D printing to help solve the issue.I found several 3D models that could work, but only one caught my eye. However, when I tried it, I realized it didn't cover enough of the roll's circumference in my opinion. Additionally, its length was a bit short, causing it to roll around on the shaft, leaving most of the roll exposed.I created an initial design in Fusion 360 that resembled a cylinder with a chunk missing. However, this design proved too long and difficult to print. It fit on the roll but brushed up against the arms more than I'd like, and the cylindrical shape required it to be printed on its side, resulting in a lot of supports and bridging issues on my FLSun QQ-S printer. I returned to the drawing board and decided that a polygonal design would print much easier, so I shortened it by 1cm. Cutting the length further might have been an option, but I decided against it since it blocks more of the roll.I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. The design is unique enough to work with almost any toilet paper roll holder of standard length and should fit standard-sized rolls. It may also fit slightly larger-than-standard rolls in terms of how much paper is on the roll. I've had it on for a few days now, and haven't found any bite marks on the roll, so I'm guessing it's working. The design features 4mm total width walls to give it enough mass to be very unlikely to break or snap, printed with 2 perimeters (0.8mm walls on a .4mm nozzle) and 10% infill.Pictured TP Protector was printed on a Prusa i3 MK3S in Prusament Galaxy Black PLA. No raft or brim were used, but support enforcers in PrusaSlicer were employed to support the rings for a smoother finisher, although it's not absolutely necessary. The model is oriented so it should just work.
