Toilet paper holder
thingiverse
So, I broke the arm of my toilet paper holder and decided to print a new one from scratch. Next, as an exercise, I took it a step further by drawing the entire thing and making it customizable. With default settings, it looks like the model I used for inspiration, but I had to make some changes to the locking mechanism and other details due to various reasons. This design was actually quite challenging, not because of all the rounded edges, but because OpenScad kept exporting invalid STL files that needed repair, until I finally figured out a way to design it so that the exported files were correct. Keep in mind that you can create a non-functional custom design if you're not careful. Before printing, be sure to use a knife and carefully carve out the edges of the arm from where it attaches to the holder, especially if your first layer is thick and wide - don't force it too hard or you might damage the holder. Printing one may take longer and cost more than buying one at the store, but I made this just as an exercise after all. Edit: I made a small tweak to how the holder's placement is calculated, which should only affect very short arms compared to the holder or if the arm's corner diameter exceeds 10. Hopefully, I didn't break anything in the process.
