The RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that struck an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. This disaster resulted in over 1,500 deaths, making it one of the deadliest peacetime commercial marine disasters in modern history. The Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time and was operated by the White Star Line. It was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, where Thomas Andrews, the chief naval architect, lost his life in the disaster. The ship was commanded by Capt. Edward Smith, who also perished in the sinking. On board were some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of emigrants from Europe seeking a new life in America. The first-class accommodations included a gymnasium, swimming pool, libraries, and high-class restaurants, while a high-powered radiotelegraph transmitter was available for sending passenger messages. Although the Titanic had advanced safety features such as watertight compartments and remotely activated doors, it only carried enough lifeboats to accommodate half of its passengers. The ship's speed and lack of lifeboats ultimately contributed to the disaster. After leaving Southampton on April 10, 1912, the Titanic called at Cherbourg in France and Queenstown in Ireland before heading west to New York. On April 14, four days into the crossing, the ship hit an iceberg at 11:40 p.m., causing significant damage to its hull. The collision opened five of the ship's watertight compartments to the sea, which was more than it could handle. As a result, passengers and crew members were evacuated in lifeboats, many of which were launched only partially loaded. A disproportionate number of men were left aboard due to the women and children first protocol for loading lifeboats. At 2:20 a.m., the Titanic broke apart and foundered with over one thousand people still on board. The Cunard liner RMS Carpathia arrived just under two hours later and rescued an estimated 705 survivors. The disaster was met with worldwide shock and outrage, leading to major improvements in maritime safety regulations. Public inquiries were conducted in Britain and the United States, resulting in the establishment of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) in 1914, which still governs maritime safety today. In addition, new wireless regulations were passed worldwide to learn from the missteps in wireless communications that could have saved many more passengers. The wreck of the Titanic was discovered in 1985 during a US military mission and remains on the seabed at a depth of 12,415 feet. The ship's legacy has been depicted in numerous works of popular culture, including books, films, exhibits, and memorials. The final survivor of the sinking, Millvina Dean, passed away in 2009 at the age of 97.
