Bridgestone Corporation, a global auto and truck parts manufacturer, was established in 1931 by Shojiro Ishibashi in Kurume, Fukuoka, Japan. The name Bridgestone is derived from a Japanese term "ishi-bashi," meaning "stone bridge." In 1951, the company began selling rayon cord tires and modernized its production facilities; it also opened another building in Tokyo that housed the Bridgestone Museum. Sales exceeded ten billion yen in 1953, making Bridgestone a leading tire company in Japan. Nylon tire sales started in 1959, followed by the construction of a new Tokyo plant in 1960 to meet growing motorization demand. As of 2005, the corporation had 141 production facilities across 24 countries.
