Tiny filament spool for small printers (M8 rod axis)
thingiverse
I required a compact filament spool to pair with one of my small printers, keeping things portable and tiny. So I created this item. The core is maintained at 50mm in diameter to prevent filament breakage and also features a 70mm length for sufficient storage capacity. It remains diminutive yet pleasing. The inner hole diameter measures 9mm to accommodate an M8 rod. You will need six M4 bolts and nuts to complete the setup. Two 608zz bearings are also required if you opt for the bearing version. The 608zz core version demands printing support. Hint: Use a small piece of tape or the filament insert hole to attach the beginning of the filament to the core. UPDATE (11-MAY-2016): I added two new core designs, each with lower profile heights of 50mm and 40mm, to maintain similar proportions as standard spools, making this whole thing very appealing despite storing less filament. This configuration is estimated to handle approximately 80m of 1.75 filament. It's perfect for a mini-printer. The beer in the picture serves only as a scale comparison aid. UPDATE (10-MAY-2016): I added two new models featuring embedded bearings, which provide a smoother operation but increase the risk of filament unspooling. This version also features a filament insert hole and requires buildplate support during printing. I removed the simple side model to avoid confusion, as the 608ZZ version functions with both core designs.
