Tiger devouring a Gavial; Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (Copenhagen, Denmark)
myminifactory
This sculpture depicts a tiger pouncing on a gavial at the Ganges River in India, showcasing a moment of intense action in a mortal struggle. We can picture the frenzied battle that is about to unfold. The realistic anatomy and muscular tension of the tiger convey menace and violence, but since the victim itself evokes our fear, the viewer's reaction is one of curiosity rather than sympathy. Antoine-Louis Barye (24 September 1796 – 25 June 1875) was a renowned French sculptor, celebrated for his work as an animalier. Antoine-Louis Barye, a master sculptor, is also the father of Alfred Barye "Le Fils" (1839-1882), who became a respected sculptor in his own right and often collaborated with Émile-Coriolan Guillemin on notable works like "The Arab warrior on horseback".
