The Ticonderoga Class, also known as Aegis cruisers by the media, were initially developed as a modified Spruance Class but was later reclassified as a Guided Missile Cruiser when the Aegis system was integrated. From the 1970s to the early 1990s, a total of 28 vessels were constructed. The second variation included upgraded electronics and a redesigned superstructure for Cruisers CG49-CG58. In the third variation (CG59-CG73), Ticonderoga ships were enhanced with VLS Vertical Launch systems. These advanced cruisers are now integral to the Navy's surface fleet striking arm.
