Tiberius, born 42 BC, ruled as Rome's second emperor from 14 AD until his death at 37 AD, succeeding Augustus to the throne. His parents were Tiberius Claudius Nero and Livia Drusilla of the powerful Claudian clan, who gave him the personal name Tiberius Claudius Nero. When his mother divorced Nero, she married Octavian, who would later become Emperor Augustus, making him Tiberius' stepfather. After marrying Augustus's daughter and being adopted by him, Tiberius officially became a member of the Julian family, taking on the name Tiberius Julius Caesar. The emperors following Tiberius would preserve this blend of both families for nearly three decades, earning it the title Julio-Claudian dynasty.
