It was approximately the size of a lion, with powerful jaws and sharp, retractable claws. Its robust build and specialized teeth, including large carnassial cheek teeth, suggest it was a formidable predator. Thylacoleo carnifex likely preyed on large herbivores, using its strong forelimbs and claws to grapple with and subdue its prey. Despite its name, it is not closely related to modern lions but is a unique example of convergent evolution. This fascinating creature became extinct around 46,000 years ago.
