The Gerry Anderson Supermarionation television series Thunderbirds and subsequent feature films Thunderbirds Are Go and Thunderbird 6 (1965-68) showcased an impressive array of futuristic air, land, and sea vehicles and machines, designed primarily by special effects director Derek Meddings. These advanced machines belonged to the International Rescue organisation and played a key role in their high-stakes rescues. Known as the "Thunderbirds", there were five core machines plus various other rescue craft that made up this fleet. The series' name was inspired by these iconic vehicles, which were at the heart of every mission. International Rescue's resident technical genius, Brains, designed all of the organisation's vehicles, elevating the level of sophistication and realism in Anderson's Supermarionation productions starting with Supercar. Meddings's models brought a groundbreaking level of realism to television production, pushing the boundaries of what was previously achievable on screen. By incorporating wear and tear into his miniature models, Meddings countered their toy-like appearance and added an air of authenticity that captivated audiences worldwide.
