Thunder Bay Island is located just off the coast of Alpena, Michigan, where a thriving lighthouse, Life Saving Station, and bustling fishing village once stood. This precise model showcases the USCG boathouse that was constructed in 1906, one of several such structures that once dotted the island's shores. Sadly, this particular boathouse now stands as the last remaining one on the island, rapidly deteriorating under the relentless onslaught of time. This meticulous model was brought to life through a collaborative effort between Alpena Community College's Marine Technology program and Thunder Bay Island Lighthouse Preservation Society, with expert support from Agisoft and DJI 3Pro. The UAV technology utilized in its creation played a pivotal role in testing the cutting-edge applications of both drone and marine technologies.
