Human: Homeland: East Asia. Description: Thunberg's shrub is up to 1 m tall, a densely branched shrub with thin branches. Leaves are green or red tinged, 2-4 cm long, lobate, with a distinctly rounded tip and gradually narrowing towards the base. It has mostly simple thorns, which are 5-15 mm long. Flowers are in zygomorphic inflorescences, with an obliquely curved axis. Flowers are yellowish or reddish. Fruits are red elliptical berries. Blooming period: May-June. Maturation of seeds: From July onwards, possibly throughout the winter. Propagation and spread: Birds eat the fruits, probably dispersing also seeds, so that young plants may appear far from the mother plant. The shrub is also spreading vegetatively through branching and rooting of cut branches. Habitats: Frequently an ornamental shrub or in living fences, it appears spontaneously in the understory of living fences and forests. The species subspontaneously spreads mainly along forest streams, from which it may spread also into the forest space, where its invasiveness is already evident.
