Three Phase Magnetic Carabiner

Magnetic carabiners, the latest technology in locking carabiners, may not be visually appealing to some climbers seeking safety assurances. Northern Arizona University's Dr. Jennifer Wade designed a carabiner that addresses this concern, offering increased visual comfort compared to other magnetic locking carabiners. Initially designed for climbing, the device could also be adapted for industrial use by changing its material from 7075-T6 aluminum to A36 steel, which is less expensive, has a larger elastic modulus, and lower electrical conductivity, thereby increasing safety factors. The carabiner's redesign involves transforming the simple two-step magnetic locking model into a three-step design by adding a slide lock to the gate. This innovation increases the load rating when closed, enhancing visual reassurance and overall safety for climbers.
